Thursday Movie Picks: Blockbuster Flops

Hey, guys!
Welcome to another entry for Thursday Movie Picks.
It’s a series hosted by Wandering through the Shelves, so if you want to join the party, head over to her blog! It’s pretty easy: check out each week’s topic and come up with 3 to 5 movies that fit the theme.
This week I’ll talk about some of the biggest blockbuster flops!

#1 Alexander

Granted, the theatrical version of this film is horrible. I totally see why it failed at the box office. However, if you decide to give it a chance, please go check out the director’s cut. The movie is infinitely better in that version!

#2 Solo: A Star Wars Story

I wasn’t aware that Solo was such a box office failure, but according to Wikipedia it certainly was. Well, the film was rather flat and there was nothing memorable about it.

This week I’ll talk about films dealing with muses!

#1 Hercules

This is the most literal pick I could think of. The 1997 Disney animation features the original Greek muses who tell Hercules’ story.

#2 Factory Girl

I haven’t seen this one yet, but Andy Warhol’s work is inspiring for me. Factory Girl tells the story of his muse Edie Sedgwick, played by Sienna Miller.

#1 Knocked Up

The first film that popped in my head when I read the topic was Knocked Up. I watched it a while ago and it was quite funny and adorable. Big thumbs up for this one!

#2 Where the Heart is

This is one of Natalie Portman. She plays a pregnant teenager who tries to figure out her life. The film follows her over the course of several years.

#1 Lilyhammer

Who said that shows about gangster have to be gloomy and serious? Lilyhammer is so funny and charming despite some dark undertones here or there. A must watch!

#2 Peaky Blinders

I am so intrigued by the premise of this show. Although I haven’t seen it yet, I’m already in love. Just look at the trailer – how can this not be brilliant?

This week I’ll talk about some of my favorite period dramas. There are tons of good films out there that would fit the description, but I’ll just go with the ones that popped in my head first!

#1 Ever After

This one is absolutely magical. Starring Drew Barrymore, Ever After is a super smart take on the fairy-tale Cinderella. It’s all around enchanting, so make sure to give it a shot!

#2 Les Misérables

I’m a bit late to the party with this one, as I first watched it two months ago. However, I was hooked from the first song on. The movie was great and my Spotify playlist now consists mostly of the score!

#1 The Departed

Martin Scorsese. Leonardo DiCaprio. Matt Damon. Mark Wahlberg. Jack Nicholson. Do I need to say anything else?

#2 Reservoir Dogs

Quentin Tarantino is always a brilliant choice. Reservoir Dogs was his first big production and he certainly delivered. Just about everything about this film is amazing, so be sure to check it out!
