Movie Mania: Rogue One – A Star Wars Story

Hey guys! After checking out all the trilogies, I am now moving on to the Star Wars Stories. So let’s talk about the first: Rogue One!

The Plot:
First of all the timeline: this film is set right before the events of A New Hope (Episode IV). The Death Star is currently under construction and scientist Galen Erso is forced to finish the project after his wife was killed. His daughter Jyn managed to get away with the help of a rebel extremist. After fifteen years Jyn reconnects with the rebels and they embark on a mission…

The Rating:
Well, well. Before watching Rogue One, I was concerned that all those A Star Wars Story movies would be just easy ways to get more money from the franchise. I honestly hadn’t expected the film to be too good. However, Rogue One pleasantly surprised me. There is so much story going on, I was a bit confused at first. The constructed story is very intricate and fast paced. So I soon got drawn right into Rogue One and was pretty excited about what’s going on. Although Rogue One is very close to the events of A New Hope, it’s a unique film that doesn’t try to copy from existing fan favorites.  Continue reading

Movie Mania: Star Wars Episode VIII – The Last Jedi

Hello my lovely readers!
This is the last post on the Star Wars trilogy. We are still waiting for Episode IX to be released, but at least I had some time to check out Episode VIII – The Last Jedi! Stay tuned for reviews on Rogue One and Solo, those are coming soon!

The Plot:
Rey has finally found Luke Skywalker, but he is determined not to leave Ahch-To and reluctant to teach Rey about the Force.
The Resistance is still fighting the First Order which also means fighting Kyle Ren, the son of Leia and Han who went to the dark side…

The Rating:
After I wasn’t 100% convinced by The Force Awakens, I was still excited to check out The Last Jedi. Let me tell you, this one is brilliant!
In contrast with Episode VII, The Last Jedi surprised me several times and was not so foreseeable.
As before, the CGI effects are on point and the battle scenes are exciting.  Continue reading

Movie Mania: Star Wars Episode VII – The Force Awakens

Hey guys!
I finally made to the latest Star Wars trilogy. So far two movies have been released: The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi. So let’s continue the Star Wars review series with my thoughts on Episode VII – The Force Awakens!

The Plot:
30 years after the Galactic Civil War we witnessed in the Episodes IV-VI, the First Who is seeking to destroy the New Republic. Leia is now a general leading the Resistance.
In the meantime, Rey encounters a droid who has an important message to deliver. Along with a deserted Stormtrooper named Finn, she decides to back up the resistance and is promptly handed a big task: find Luke Skywalker who exiled himself after things went sour with his apprentice…

The Rating:
I was pretty excited about checking this one out but I have to admit, my feelings are a bit mixed.
First of all, Rey is an amazing character and I can’t wait to find out where her journey will lead to (especially when it comes to Kylo Ren). Of course CGI effects have developed a lot since the last trilogy and the optics of Episode VII are absolutely stunning. I love how many new sceneries we get to explore!
However, I have a problem here: quite a lot of the scenes reminded me a lot of the original trilogy and tons of the characters returned. Continue reading

Movie Mania: Star Wars Episode I – The Phantom Menace

Hey guys!
It’s time for another Star Wars review. Today we have the first episode of the prequel trilogy. So let’s see what George Lucas was up to with that one!

The Plot:
The Galactic Republic is in an uproar. The Trade Federation is preparing for a full-scale invasion on the planet Naboo. Two Jedis are sent to negotiate but only narrowly escape. They rescue Queen Padmé Amidala and try to bring her to safety. However, they get stranded on the desert planet Tantooine where they make new acquaintances…

The Rating:
It took me quite a long time to finally check out the prequel trilogy. After I had really enjoyed the original trilogy, I wasn’t sure about getting started with this one.
Anyway, I ended up having a great time! The Phantom Menace is much better than I had expected. The pretext with the political problems in the Galactic Republic is a bit tiresome, but the rest of the story is interesting. Liam Neeson and Ewan McGregor are pretty cool Jedi, although I had thought they looked a bit ridiculous on the poster.
Especially little Anakin Skywalker is full on adorable, so that’s a huge plus point! Continue reading

Movie Mania: Star Wars Episode VI – Return of the Jedi

Hello my lovely readers!
Welcome to part 3 of my Star Wars series. I’ve reached the end of the original trilogy and can’t wait to continue with the prequels. So let’s talk about Return of the Jedi!

The Plot:
Luke and his friends set out to rescue Han Solo from the carbonite prison he is trapped in.
Furthermore, the Rebel Alliance is still fighting against Darth Vader and heading into final battle. Vader is confronted by Luke and an important revelation regarding Leia is made…

The Rating:
Well, that was quite a ride. So many plot-twists and turns and surprises!
Return of the Jedi is a worthy conclusion to the original trilogy although I have to admit it is the certainly the weakest part. It’s the kind of movie you enjoy when watching once or twice, but it doesn’t really get better or more interesting by re-watching (at least when I compare it to The Empire Strikes Back. Don’t get me wrong, Return of the Jedi is a good movie, just not as brilliant as the first two installments of the trilogy. For my taste the end was a bit theatric and to sentimental.  Continue reading

Movie Mania: Star Wars Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back

Hey guys!
This is the second post in my Star Wars series. The Empire Strikes Back hit cinemas in 1980 and is regarded as one of the greatest movies of all time. So let’s see about my thougths about it!

The Plot:
Three years after the destruction of the Death Star, the Rebel Alliance is still going strong. Darth Vader and the Imperial Fleet are still trying to hunt Luke and his friends down. While Luke trains his Jedi powers with Master Yoda, the others flee to the planet of Bespin, where they are greeted by some old enemies…

The Rating:
Among all of the Star Wars films, this one contains the infamous scene with Luke and Darth Vader. Even if you’ve never seen any of the movies or don’t car for sci-fi at all, I’m sure you know the iconic line “Luke, I am your father”.
It’s almost a shame that it’s so famous, as it completely ruins the huge plot-twist. I’m a bit jealous of those who got to be surprised by this – it must have come as a huge shock back in 1980! Continue reading
