Book Review: The Amber Spyglass by Philip Pullman (His Dark Materials #3)

Hey Folks!

I finally found the time to finish the last installment of Philip Pullman’s famous His Dark Materials series. Did I love it? Hate it? Well, let’s find out!

The Plot:
Lyra has been taken by Mrs Coulter. Of course her dear friend Will sets out on a journey through out the worlds. Only together they will be able to help Lord Asriel in his fight against the Authority, also known as God. But on their way they will encounter many dangerous tasks, they even travel through the land of the dead… Continue reading

Book Review: The Subtle Knife by Philip Pullman (His Dark Materials #2)

Hello, hello!

Due to a rather stressful time at University it took me some time to catch up with my current to-read-list.
I already wrote on the first installment of Philip Pullman’s famous His Dark Materials trilogy. Finally I found the time to share my thoughts on part 2, The Subtle Knife.
So here we go!

The Plot:
Surprisingly, this one doesn’t start off with Lyra, or any other character we already know. The story begins with Will who finds his way to a different world where he encounters Lyra. They try to help each other but their adventure gets more dangerous with every page you read.
Will comes into possession of the subtle knife, a very powerful tool, that can cut windows between worlds.
While the kids struggle on their own, Lord Asriel is preparing for war… Continue reading

Book vs. Movie: Northern Lights/The Golden Compass

Hey guys!

I just got started with another famous book series: His Dark Materials by Philip Pullman. Not too long ago I also read his Sally Lockhart Quartet and absolutely loved it, so I’m thrilled to finally check out Northern Lights (also known as The Golden Compass), the first installment. Well, in 2007 this novel was turned into a movie, that means twice the fun for me!

The Plot:
Lyra’s life is about to change drastically. While so far the girl got to spent her time playing, it gets serious when her friend Roger disappears. It soon turns out that something big is going on her and Lyra is determined to find out about it and save her friend. Continue reading

Book Review: The Tin Princess by Philip Pullman (Sally Lockhart #4)

My dear readers!

I am almost sad to report that I finished The Tin Princess, the last installment in Philip Pullman’s Sally Lockhart quartet. I’ve grown so fond of the characters, I wish there’d be more books!

The Plot:
Adelaide, the sweet young girl from The Ruby in the Smoke is back. And believe me she made quite an improvement. Adelaide got marry to a young fellow who is actually the Prince of a little country name Razkavia. Life should be well, but as it turns out, somebody wants to murder Adelaide’s dear husband. With Becky, a young girl who is supposed to teach her German, and Jim she heads for Razkavia and gets more than she expected…

The Rating:
First of all I have to say that I was very surprised that the final installment in the Sally Lockhart quartet is actually not about Sally Lockhart at all. She only appears briefly at the beginning and the end of the novel. Continue reading

Book Review: The Tiger in the Well by Philip Pullman (Sally Lockhart #3)

Hey Guys!

As my regular readers will know, I am currently making my way through Philip Pullman’s famous Sally Lockhart quartet. The first two installments were awesome and I am very much in love with the adaptations. Although the BBC stopped after part two, I still hope that someday we’ll also get adaptations for The Tiger in the Well and The Tin Princess.
Anyway, here are some thoughts on #3, The Tiger in the Well!

The Plot:
Life is well. Sally is happy. She has her business, her house and most importantly: her daughter Harriett. Everything seems to be perfect until one day Sally is informed that her husband is filing for divorce and wants custody of his child. The problem here? Sally is not and was never married, and Harriett’s father died in a father before she was born…

The Rating:
Philip Pullman really knows how to pull you into a story! I could hardly put the book, it was so thrilling. Although he takes a long time building up the story you never get bored. (I sometimes got annoyed, because I wanted to know so badly what would happen next…) Continue reading

Book vs. Movie: The Shadow in the North (Sally Lockhart #2)

As some of you know by now, I’m currently making my way through all the popular and famous book series out there. Of course I couldn’t miss out on the Sally Lockhart Quartet. The first two books of the series were turned into movies by the BBC. The second installment, The Shadow in the North, is what I want to write about today.

The Plot:
Sally finally has her life in order. After all the stuff she had to go through in The Ruby in the Smoke, she achieved a lot. She even has her own business. And that’s right where the trouble start. Sally gives financial advice but an elderly woman informs her that the company Sally advised her to put all the money in went bankrupt. Of course our heroine starts to investigate and stirs up some things better left alone for it will only cause a tragic end… Continue reading
