Book Review: Lean In – Women, Work, and the Will to Lead by Sheryl Sandberg

Hey Guys!
I recently did a review on The Good Girls Revolt, which deals with inequality at the workplace. After that book I was so intrigued by the topic, that I started searching for more. That’s when I stumbled upon Lean In, an impressive piece of writing that every woman (and man) should take to heart!

The Plot:
Sheryl Sandberg is one of the most successful women of our time. She worked for the US treasury department, for Google and has been COO of Facebook for about 10 years now. So when somebody like Sheryl speaks up about challenges women face at the workplace and on their way to success, you listen up!
Lean In features episodes from Sheryl’s life but also stories from some of her colleagues/friends. She points out where the biggest challenges lie and what needs to change. In society but also within ourselves. With this book, she gives each woman a tool for making her way to the top.

The Rating:
This book is a slap in the face – in the most positive way possible! For me it came as a wake-up call. Sheryl Sandberg points out many mistakes women (herself included) make in the professional world. I was kind of angry with myself when I realized how many of those I had already committed in the past without even noticing.
Many of the things Sandberg mentions happen unconsciously but it takes concious effort to change our little habits and to lean in.
What I love about this book is that it’s 100 % relatable. No matter how perfect you are, I bet you’ll find something in there that you did. But don’t get me wrong, Lean In isn’t just pages full of criticism. Continue reading

The Plot:
It’s 1969 and the female employees of Newsweek magazine are about to write history. The women filed a lawsuit against their employers as they were discriminated and treated unequally based on their gender. But the fight is far from over…

The Rating:
I hardly ever pick up non-fiction books, but when it comes to The Good Girls Revolt, I felt it was a book I simply had to read.
First of all, I was deeply impressed by the women of Newsweek standing up for their rights in a time when equality was even further away than it is now. They made an important step for all women to come after them. It certainly was a wake-up call for their employers and many others out there. Continue reading
