Hey guys! I finally got around watching the film everybody is talking about. Two years ago the first film in the new franchise set in the wizarding world was released and ever since then fans have been waiting anxiously for the next installment. But does it live up to all the big expectations? Let’s find out!
After the events of the first movie, Newt Scamander is trying to get the Ministry of Magic to lift his travel ban. Little does he know that very soon he’d be leaving America on request of Albus Dumbledor. Newt is to locate Credence Barebone before the dark and powerful Wizard Grindelwald can find him…
To be honest, I just struggled a bit with summing up the plot. That represents my feelings on the film quite well!
First of all, despite being titled The Crimes of Grindelwald, I couldn’t really figure out what his crimes actually were. I had expected to see what he had done in the past, but I suppose we’ll get that in another movie. In this installment he doesn’t do that much and actually has very little screen time. That one of the major points that irritated me about this film.
Furthermore, in terms of plot, there’s barely anything going on, that’s what made it so hard to summarize. We don’t get too many bits of new information and ultimatly the entire film seems to be setting up for things yet to come. With a run time of over two hours, it’s simply far to long to be enjoyable when merely consisting of building blocks for later adventures. What we find out here could have been shortened to a flashback scene in the next movie and nobody would be sad about it. Many new characters get introduced but barely get to say a word. Leta Lestrange, for example, was such a promising character. We find out a few things about her past, but ultimately she remains ever so pale as she has just about no lines in this film! I can’t even say anything about Jude Law’s performance or about Johnny Depp because they had just exteneded cameos in this movie! Continue reading
