Book Review: Cinder by Marissa Meyer (Lunar Chronicles #1)

Today is book review day. The one I chose this time is a novel by Marissa Meyer, I’ve read tons of good stuff about it and the blogosphere seems to be in love with the entire series, so I finally decided to give Cinder, part 1 of The Lunar Chronicles, a shot!

The Plot:
Cinder is a 16-year-old Cyborg living in New Beijing. Loathed by her stepmother, she works as a mechanic to earn the family’s income. Her life is about to change when Prince Kai, soon-to-be emperor, visits her shop and asks her to repair his android. Cinder gets pulled into something she didn’t think she was part of, but believe me, she was wrong…

 

The Rating:
It’s incredibly hard to pull of fairy-tale retellings. Most of those end up a cheesy copy, unimaginative or simply weird. However, Marissa Meyer surprised me by kicking off The Lunar Chronicles with a fascinating modern version of Cinderella.
One of the reasons this works so well is because Marissa Meyer doesn’t attempt to stick too closely to the original story. There are many moments where she hints at something but still strays far enough from the fairy-tale to deliver something completely new.

Movie Mania: Cinderella (2015)

I’m currently catching up with all the magical and fairytale themed movies that were pretty big in the last few years. After I rambled a bit about Maleficent, today I want to introduce you all to the 2015 adaptation of a well-known fairytale: Cinderella.

 

The Plot:
Once upon a time there lived Cinderella, a wonderful and pretty girl everybody loved. But then her mother died and her father got married again – to an awful woman with two daughters of her own. After the father too passed away Cinderella was degraded to a maid, having to clean, to cook and to do everything else for her spoiled step-sister.
But everything could change when a great ball is held to find a suitable wife for the young Prince…

Top 5 Disney Sidekicks

You can probably tell by now that I fancy Disney. I’ve spent many hours watching the movies and today I decided to dedicate a post to all the sidekicks that never failed to make me laugh!

 

Mushu (Mulan):
I love this one for always being at Mulan’s side and never letting her down. He may not be the biggest, strongest dragon in town, but he surely is the one with the biggest heart. He’s funny and tries really hard (even though  he does not always succeed). As one of the clumsiest sidekicks of all time, Mushu always made me laugh.

One Week of Christmas: The 7 Best Movies for the Holidays Part 1

There are some movies that inevitably come around as soon as snow starts to fall. Of course a few of them are must sees. For me without watching the seven movies I am about to present here Christmas season wouldn’t be the same. They completely became part of my holiday routine and from year to year i still look forward to watching these films. =)

Three Gifts for Cinderella

I guess everybody is familiar with the fairytale Cinderella. This Czech movie is a slightly different version. Released in 1973 it has become a firm part of christmas routine for many people around the world. As soon as December begins this film starts to pop up on TV every week. I remember watching it since I was little and by now I couldn’t imagine Christmas without it. To me this movie is the first step to get in a christmas-y mood.
