Letterkenny – A Review of Seasons 1-9

Hey guys!
Today I bring you my new favorite comedy of all-time. You have no idea how glad I am that Letterkenny was recommended to me! As I am writing this, 9 seasons have been released but there are more come and I can’t wait.

The Plot (as found on RT):

This comedy series showcases the antics of the residents of Letterkenny, a small rural community in Canada. Siblings Wayne and Katy run a small farm and produce stand, with Wayne’s friends Daryl and “Squirrely” Dan helping out. Many of the town’s inhabitants fall into one of several groups, which include the farmers, or “hicks,” the out-of-towners on the local hockey team, the local drug addicts and the “natives,” who are members of the local First Nation. “Letterkenny” began its life as a YouTube series called “Letterkenny Problems.”

The Rating:

As you may have gathered from the introduction, I absolutely love this show. 😅
Honestly, I had no expectations going in, I hadn’t even heard of the series until somebody sat me down to watch it. I was done for from the first episode on. I swear, everything about this show is absolutely brilliant!

First of all, the writing. I think I said about 7 million times while watching this that the writers deserve all the awards in the world. The show is funny to a degree that your belly will hurt from laughing so hard. But it’s not just funny, it’s also smart. The banter between the characters is witty, eloquent and I simply admire the writers for being able to come up with so many great puns. Letterkenny really is unlike anything else I have ever seen in that regard. So far, they managed to keep the quality super high throughout all seasons. I am convinced that the upcoming season will be no exception in that regard.

The characters we get are just amazing. The show plays deftly with clichés and stereotypes. Whenever you might think a cahracters is a blueprint from some specific trope, there will be some twist to it. The writers are obviously aware of the kind of characters they have on the show and just do such a great job giving them some depth and allowing them to grow. What I often notice (especially with comedy shows) is that the writers try to keep a certain status quo, not giving any room to change because, well, people think this exact thing is funny, so we’ll keep doing it over and over again. While to a degree that is somewhat neccessary – you can’t constantly uproot your entire show – the characters on Letterkenny feel more realistic in that regard as they are allowed to make decisions and do things a bit differently here or there.

Of course, the best writing would be nothing without a cast to bring it all to life. So, can I just say how freaking on point everything is here? I swear, I wouldn’t change a single actress. They are all perfect for their roles and play their parts to perfection. Considering how insanely funny the script is, I wonder how hard it was to not constantly crack and fall into a fit of laughter while shooting scenes.

Another thing I love about the show is the soundtrack. I was constantly using Shazam to get pretty much every single song they played. My hope is that somebody on Spotify did me a favor and already created a playlist with all the tunes, because at some I kinda gave up. 😅

And finally, I can’t talk about Letterkenny without acknowledging all the adorables little puppers and doggos in the show. See, every episode opens with the little bit where one of the characters (usually Wayne) says a couple of sentences on whatever topic. And when he does that more often then not he holds one or more dogs, or some are running around in the background. You have no idea how happy that made me. All those dogs are so cute, I just want to pet them.

You can tell from my rather ecstatic review that Letterkenny quickly advanced to one of my favorite shows. I have never seen anything this funny and this well-written. If you haven’t seen the show yet please, please, please do yourself a favor and check it out. You will not regret it. Bonus: I discovered that mentioning Letterkenny in casual conversation will immediatly award you best-friend status with any Canadian in the room. 😅
