Hello, hello!
Earlier this week I wrote a review about Hereditary, which I saw during an online watch-party with friends. Well, Revenge is the second movie we tackled that night, so let’s see how that one did!

The Plot (as found of Rotten Tomatoes):

Jen is enjoying a romantic getaway with her wealthy boyfriend — until his two sleazy friends arrive for an unannounced hunting trip. As tension mounts in the house, the situation abruptly and viciously intensifies, culminating in a shocking act that leaves Jen left for dead. Unfortunately for her assailants, she survives and soon begins a relentless quest for bloody revenge.

The Rating:

Oh boy, where to begin?
This movie was certainly also worthy of a running commentary but not because it was good. I almost lost my shit when I saw that Revenge has a rating of 93% on Rotten Tomatoes.
So many things about were just TERRIBLE!

I need to discuss some of that in details, so from here on this review will contain heavy spoilers – contiue reading at your own risk. 😉

Let me begin with the one positive thing I have to say. The cinematography is pretty cool. The way certain scenes were filmed and framed really stood out to me. Also, the acting performances were decent. Look, I found another thing I didn’t hate.

I’m pretty sure they forgot to hire somebody for continuity here. Why you may ask. Well let me give you a couple of examples: in the first part of the film, the leading lady gets impaled on a tree. She manages to break off the branch she’s stuck on (we will NOT discuss the logic behind this or I will lose my shit), from there on running around with a piece of wood jutting from abdomen. So far, so good. However, when she turns around you can see that the make-up department forgot to do something for her back. No piece of branch sticking out, in fact, she barely has a scratch on her back!
And then almost at the end of the film, we were collectively about to throw our laptops against the wall. The guy is shot in the stomach, on the right side. However, in one scene they accidentlly moved the bullet wound to the left and in the next one it’s back on the right side. Trust me, we rewound several times to verify this. I’m not joking.

While I acknowledge that this is an action/revenge flick and logic is usually a bit stretched, here it’s definitely wearing thin. She gets off the tree by burning it down, with a lighter. Sure, makes sense. She loses insane amounts of blood, but hey, no problem. Pulls out the branch, sure no problem, cauterizes the wound with a beer can, of course, why wouldn’t you, and completely closes the gaping wound why also basically burning a tattoo of the beer company into her belly. I need a moment to take a deep breath.

There are many more moment like this. The film tries to come off as serious but it doesn’t match with the presentation. It’s not even so bad it’s funny, because the movies tries hard to be, you know, a proper film. It’s annoying and frustrating.

Although the movie isn’t long (around 100 minutes) we still checked several times how much more there is because it was just dragging on so much.
What the movie doesn’t do, however, is use many action tropes. There are moment where you’d expect an explosion etc. but it’s not there. This would be fine if the rest of the film was decent. But as everything else was just back, you notice the absence of something more exciting. It’s simply boring for a big part.

Also, the soundtrack. Is there even a soundtrack? It’s barely existing. Many scenes could have easily been improved by a killer songs but there is nothing.
I’m not sure if the general problem was just a lack of buget for certain things or if all of the above-mentioned stuff was intentional. I can’t wrap my head around that the ratings on RT are so good.

I hated this film. On so, so many levels. There is nothing but fails, inconsistencies and missed opportunities. I had such high hopes for this one but my friends and I collectively ended up dispising Revenge.
