Kill la Kill – A Review

Hello, all you lovlies!
Today I want to talk about a show that was so weird to watch, I’m at a loss for words. Weird does not even begin to cover it. Why, you might ask? Well, here’s the deal…

The Plot:

Dressed up in a powerful sentinent armor, Ryuko wilds one scissor blade, fighting against the demons of her past, seeking revenge for her dead father. It soon turns out, things are more complicated than initially thought…

The Rating:

This was probably one of the weirdest things I have ever seen in my entire life. I still don’t know what the heck I watched there! 😅

Weird as the show may be, it certainly was entertaining. I can’t even tell you how much I laughed at the ridiculousness of the show. Sure, there are many fucked up moments, but they are so beyond over the top that I couldn’t help but chuckle. What could have amused me so, you ask?

First of all, simply the concept of the show. An armor (read tiny scrap of clothes that barely covers anything) that drinks your blood, but you really have to get naked for it work properly. Excuse me, I’m sorry, what now?
I mean, if you try hard enough you could make this work on a meta level, you know kind of philosophical. You have to lay yourself bare and get lost in what you do? Somehow it reminded me of the horror movie Martyrs, but that’s a hole other trash-can fire, so let’s not talk about that.

There are fibers in the armor (and school uniforms) that make people stronger but ultimately it’s about world domination. The resistence is called, and I swear I am not joking, Nudist Beach. I almost cracked a rib laughing about that. And that’s not even considering the position the had to use for their weird weapons.

The show features explorations of trauma, family dynamics, pressure to perform and even deals with whether money can buy happiness. To be honest, some of the genuinly interesting aspects addressed might get a bit lost under the sheer craziness of the show, but I promise you they are there if you take a very close look.

I seriously don’t know what else to say about the show other than that it was unbelievable hilarious despite being very fucked up and slightly disturbing at times. I very much understand that the majority of people won’t like this show, but I ended up laughing so much!
