Merlin: Season 3 – A Review

Hello, y’all!
I’m slowly making my way through all the season of Merlin and just finished the third one. So, without further ado, let’s get right down to it and see if it was any good!

The Plot (according to Rotten Tomatoes):

The bewitching third series finds Arthur (Bradley James) and Merlin (Colin Morgan) discovering the long-missing Morgana (Katie McGrath) and returning her to Camelot. But her arrival may include a scheme against Uther Pendragon (Anthony Head) whose mental faculties are beginning to falter. As his father’s mind begins to fray, Arthur struggles to help Uther retain the throne. As their relationship continues to grow, Arthur and Gwen (Angel Coulby) decide to keep it hidden. Though Merlin is becoming more assertive and escaping the shadow of his mentor Gaius (Richard Wilson) the pair find they often have more strength together than apart.

The Rating:

This was a great season! I feel like the show has finally found it’s footing and is playing it’s strengths well. The plot becomes somewhat more daring, darker and intense.

While many familar faces make a return, they don’t just come back but get bigger parts to play. Additionally, there are a few new cast aditions that had me rather excited. I have some thoughts on that, so beware of spoilers after the cut!

First of all, we need to talk about Morgana. After returning in the first episodes of this season, she plays a most vital role in the story. Together with Morgause she’s plotting and scheming to bring down Uther. Over the course of the season they hatch several plans culminating in the final episode with Morgana being crowned queen and an army of undead being raised. Katie McGrath plays her part extraordinarily well, and now I want to see more of her!
Well, they did not manage to convince me with every little plan they had going on, but overall this part of the plot was most intriguing.

Part of their schemes against Camelot and Uther involve Cenred, a king who is two provide Morgana and Morgause with an army. I was delighted to see Tom Ellis join the show. As usual, he doesn’t disappoint! The other cast addition I was rather happy about was Gwaine. Can I just say, what a snack that man is? But it’s not just eye-candy he’s providing. He’s funny, a great fighter and all his scenes greatly amused me. I really hope we get to see more of him in the seasons I have left.

Merlin and Arthur also play their parts wonderfully. Their banter is great as always and the show really seems to know what it’s doing now. To be fair, there wasn’t really anything unexpected from their part. Everybody did their job and I’m happy about it. The show had it’s funny moments as it always does. While I usually enjoy those tremendously, in this season it sometimes seemed a little at odds with the darker tone the show is now sporting. But overall it didn’t disrupt the vibe too much, and I don’t really have anything to complain about!

Merlin gets better with every season as the show plays it’s strengths well and also explores darker avenues. The cast is amazing and I can’t wait to see where else they’ll take the story!
