TMP Halloween Edition: Based on a True Story

Hey, guys!
Welcome to another entry for Thursday Movie Picks.
It’s a series hosted by Wandering Through the Shelves, so if you want to join the party, head over to her blog! It’s pretty easy: check out each week’s topic and come up with 3 to 5 movies that fit the theme.
To continue the horror topics that traditional for October, today I bring you a bunch of movies that are based on or were inspired by true events!

#1 The Exorcism of Emily Rose

Super creepy and haunting exorcism film, which is inspired by the death of a German woman.

#2 The Conjuring

The paranormal investigators from this franchise are based on a real-life couple and therefore, the events depicted in the films are also supposedly true.

#3 The Shining

Stephen King was inspired to write The Shining when he actually stayed in a hotel very similar to the Overlook which was said to be haunted!

What’s your favorite horror movie inspired by true events? Let me know in the comments!

  1. I read the novel of The Shining and it was deeply unsettling. When I saw the movie I didn’t expect it to match the book’s level of dread and it didn’t but it was an okay adaptation,

We match! Honestly what drew me to the theatre to see Emily Rose was Laura Linney, Campbell Scott and Tom Wilkinson. They were all very good and the movie was decent but I’ve only ever seen it that once.

The Conjuring and its sequel are all over the joint today but I’ve seen neither.

Beside our match I picked two others that I while I can’t say I loved them I thought they were okay.

The Exorcism of Emily Rose (2005)-Plot: An attorney (Laura Linney) defends a priest (Tom Wilkinson) accused of negligent homicide after an exorcism.

Basis: Anneliese Michel died after being subjected to an exorcism. She was found to have been malnourished and dehydrated. Her parents and the responsible priests were charged with negligent homicide and sentenced to three years’ probation. Her epilepsy was likely the real culprit.

The Mothman Prophecies (2002)-Plot: A man (Richard Gere) investigates the Mothman, a strange red-eyed creature that appears to signify impending disasters.

Basis: Journalist John Keel wrote The Mothman Prophecies after investigating hundreds of reports of sightings and other strange phenomena in Point Pleasant, West Virginia during the late 1960s.

The Entity (1982)-Plot: A woman (Barbara Hershey) is tormented and sexually molested by an invisible demon.

Basis: In 1974 Doris Bither claimed to have been repeatedly sexually assaulted by an invisible entity leading to her being observed by doctoral students at the University of California, Los Angeles.

  2. I have seen the Shining but it took me years to watch it because as soon as those freaky twins showed up, I would change the channel. I have not seen the other 2 but am well aware of the German girl who was considered to be possessed. I wouldn’t mind seeing both but that 2nd Trailer…I jumped at the end …really scared the hell out of me. ….it doesn’t take much.
