The People vs O.J. Simpson (American Crime Story Season 1) – A Review

Hey guys!
I’m finally catching up a bit on my Netflix to-watch list. American Crime Story is a show I’ve been curious about for quite a while now, so let’s get right down to it!

The Plot (according to Rotten Tomatoes):

Season 1 of this crime drama and anthology focuses on the O.J. Simpson murder trial as portrayed in Jeffrey Toobin’s book “The Run of His Life: The People v. O.J. Simpson”.

The Rating:

This was absolutely brilliant!
First of all, it’s very interesting, especially if you don’t really know anything about the trial. You see, I was born in 1994 and I live in Europe so this is pretty far away for me. Therefore, it was fascinating to get some insight into the trial of the century. I can imagine that it’s also interesting to watch if you followed the trial back then. Thus, you can compare and judge how well they did at bringing reality to the screen!

The People vs. O.J. is nothing short of intense. Apart from the scenes in court, we get many scenes depicting what went on behind the scenes. Some of those really get under your skin.
At the end of the show, it was mentioned that almost everybody involved in the trial at some point ended up writing a book, I imagine that the combination of all that information allowed the showrunners to deliver a somewhat authentic picture.

I, furthermore, love how they made an effort to include as many perspectives as possible, thus allowing the audience to judge for themselves. I feel like they tried hard not to be tendentious and give as objective a picture as possible.

The cast is also chosen extremely well. Not only did they nail the looks (believe me, I checked), the acting is more than superb. I expected nothing less from Sarah Paulson but David Schwimmer really came through and surprised me!

Moreover, this show will provide you with some food for thought. Although it’s been a hot minute since all of this went down, you can’t help but wonder how much things changed. Take for example prosecutor Marcia Clark and how the entire world just talked about her looks instead of her capabilities. You get the gist.

If you haven’t seen The People vs. O.J. Simpsons yet, please make sure to give it a shot. It’s not only a fascinating story but also reenacted perfectly.

  1. This was such a great show! OJ’s acquittal is the first major news event I can remember in my life time, but I still didn’t know a lot of the case aside from that. So I liked that I learned something as well since I was so young when all of this was happening.
