The Goonies

Hello, my darling readers!
Today I bring you an 80s classic that I watched for the first time. So buckle up for a treasure hunt with The Goonies!

The Plot:

A ragtag group of kids discovers a treasure map on an attic and decides to go for the gold. Well, they hadn’t anticipated crossing paths with a gangster family that just sprung free of jail…

The Rating:

I was incredibly excited when Netflix added this film. I’ve heard so much about The Goonies and as I usually love 80s flicks E. T. or Raiders of the Lost Ark, I anticipated to thoroughly enjoy this one as well.

However, I was not exactly blown away. Don’t get me wrong. I didn’t hate, nor do I think The Goonies is a bad film. I just wasn’t as thrilled or entertained as I would have expected – especially in comparison with the movies mentioned above.

What’s the problem?
First of all, while the characters are somewhat cute, I didn’t really root for them. If you watch Raiders of the Lost Ark, you are immediately enthralled by Indiana Jones and hope for him to make it all the way. With The Goonies I felt mostly indifferent.

Furthermore, the story irritated me a little. I’m not sure if the combination of treasure hunting and being hunted by some murders gangsters really hits the stop. It felt weird at times and I could have done without the gangsters. The film is almost two hours long, so you could have cut a scene here or there.

I think I would have enjoyed the film more, had I seen it in 1985 when it came out. Well, I was born 9 years after that, so bad luck. Seeing the film today, it just feels like every other treasure hunt film I’ve ever seen. There isn’t really anything special or unique about it.

The Goonies is a cute adventure film but it didn’t really hit the mark for me. There’s nothing particularly special or memorable about the movie. Although I did enjoy watching it, I would sit down to see it a second time.

  1. I’m sorry it didn’t work for you but I think the reason it worked for me is the fact that I was 4 when the film came out and I grew up on that movie. It’s one of those films that I still love to watch as it’s just bonkers.
