Hey, guys!
It’s Tuesday, that means it’s time for a bookish favorites posts. Top 5 Tuesday is hosted by Shanah Bionic Book Worm and is quite simple: check out the topic and write a post with your picks.
Today I’ll give you some books that were not what I had expected!
#1 The Last Wish (The Witcher #1) by Andrjez Sapkowski
After the Netflix show I just had to give the books a shot as well. What I hadn’t anticipated, however, was how funny the books are. I’m currently half way through the second book and Geralt really is a sarcastic little bitch that makes me laugh out a lot!
#2 Secret Diary of a Call Girl by Belle de Jour
Maybe you are familiar with the TV show starring Billie Piper which is based on this real life diary. I had expected the real life Belle to be as charming and funny as the TV version. Unfortunately I found her rather annoying and just didn’t vibe with her.
#3 Catwoman: Soulstealer by Sarah J. Maas
Excuse me, but what the heck was this? After I read the ACOTAR and TOG books by Sarah J. Maas I was expecting another exciting book I’d love but this was rather a giant mess.
#4 Annihilation (Southern Reach #1) by Jeff VanderMeer
A friend had recommended the adaptation of this book to me and I actually found that to be visually stunning and captivating. The novel, on the other hand, was annoyingly long and didn’t answer any questions. Definitely not the kind of sci-fi I had signed up for.
#5 The Umbrella Academy
The show dropped on Netflix and I immediately binged the entire thing. The comics the show is based on are written by Gerard Way (yes, the guy from My Chemical Romance). I was excited to check out the comics and expected them to draw me in just as swiftly. Well, I was confused most of then time I didn’t really love it except for the artwork.
Which book did not turn out the way you expected? Let me know in the comments!

Sorry some of these books weren’t what you expected. I’m glad to here about the Witcher book though bc I was thinking about reading them. Happy reading!

I’d think you’d like them! It’s great that it’s just short stories, so you can finish one of them and see immediately whether it’s your thing or not.

Seeing Catwoman on your list reminded me that I could have added it to mine too……. you’re totally right – it was a freaking mess!! I DNF’d it. There was no way I could force myself to read the whole thing lol

I somehow made my way through that one. You know what, it wasn’t even the worst of the DC Icons books, now that I think about it.

It wasn’t???? Oh wow. That’s shocking. What one was the worst? (Out of curiosity – not like I plan on ever reading it 😂)

I finished all four books and the only one I really liked was Wonder Woman Warbringer. The superman one felt like a mediocre episode of an afternoon TV show. However, the batman one almost made me angry. The whole idea is so fucking stupid! Teenaged Bruce Wayne does some halfway bad and gets community service. In Arkham. Swiping the floors mere inches from the most dangerous people there. Sure, why wouldn’t that be a good idea?

Omg seriously?!? “Teenage Batman struggles with hormones instead of bad guys and goes to Jouvey……” that sounds like the worst B movie ever 😂

I felt personally insulted by the stupidity of that idea.

I haven’t read any of the books you’ve mentioned but I’m glad to see it was all bitter disappointment. 😉 I started watching The Witcher this week and although you get a glimpse of his dry sarcasm, there isn’t much at the moment. Does that incease or have they ignored that personality trait from the book?
I hope 2020 has more joyful surprises than depressing disappointments on your book shelves. x

Well, Geralt in the show doesn’t say all that much apart from Hmm and Fuck. He does have his moments although he is definitely not as funny as in the books. You can rely on Jaskier to that in the show, however. 😉

Everything is Illuminated by Safran Foer. I loved the film. It’s one of my absolute favourites but I hated the book. I don’t normally enjoy literary fiction or magical realism and it was both. The film was so much more grounded in reality.

That book really irritated me. I just couldn’t get into the story that was set in the past – too weird for me.
