Hello, my darling readers!
Last year, I watched my way through the Marvel Cinematic Universe. As I ended up enjoying all those films tremendously, I thought I need to give the DC Extended Universe a shot as well. Let’s see how that turned out…
You know the drill: Superman who was raised as Clark Kent on earth deals with his powers and finds out about his heritage. He’s actually an alien from Krypton sent away as his home planet was dying. Time to save the world!
What the heck was this? This movie is a bit of a mess, so where do I even start?
At the same time, the film is too long but not long enough at the same time. Let’s expand on that. The memories of Clark’s childhood were sprinkled throughout the film but there was no depth to it and not much rhyme or reason. So, honestly, I couldn’t be bothered to care about him.
We get a rather lengthy introduction to Krypton and Clark’s parents. Those scenes felt so stretched out for the little information they actually deliver. I kept thinking “can we get on with the story, please?”. I think we were about halfway through the film until we finally started with the actual story meant to keep you hooked.
Furthermore, I was really annoyed by the relationship between Clark Kent and Lois Lane. They meet for approximately 5 seconds and all of a sudden have a relationship that came out of nowhere and builds on absolutely nothing.
The movie is almost two and a half hours long with you really noticed. While many aspects were lacking depth and quite simply development, the overall thing felt far too long and just kept dragging on.
The main battle the film (more or less) built up to is a bit confusing and such a big stretch in the logic department. Superhero movies often are but this just did not work for me at all.
Finally, I can just never get over the fact that Clark Kent just puts on a pair of glasses and nobody realizes he is superman. Are you fucking kidding me? I am simply not willing to accept that.
This was an extremely underwhelming start for the DCEU. I really hope the following films will be able to excite me more, but Man of Steel was just a giant mess, that made me wish I had skipped it.
Did you watch the films of the DCEU? Let me know in the comments!
