TMP Television Edition: Revivals and Reboots

Hey, guys!
Welcome to another entry for Thursday Movie Picks.
It’s a series hosted by Wandering through the Shelves, so if you want to join the party, head over to her blog! It’s pretty easy: check out each week’s topic and come up with 3 to 5 movies that fit the theme.
This week, it’s a TV special featuring revivals and reboots!

#1 Ducktales

I only just found out that Ducktales is airing again. (Thank you tumblr for the info!)
It was one of my favorites as a kid, so I’m hyped that they gave it a re-vamp.

#2 Twin Peaks

Twin Peaks was one of the defining TV shows of the 90s. I was more than a little excited when a new season was announced in 2017.
I will have to re-watch it, though, to untangle all the weird stuff going on there.

#3 Gilmore Girls

I hate this reboot with a passion. Netflix decided to give us sort of an epilogue to the original show but I didn’t like anything about it. Sorry.

#4 Doctor Who:

The is my all-time favorite reboot. Doctor Who is the most iconic British TV show ever. It originally ran from 1963 to 1989. The revival kicked off in 2015. Eleven seasons later it is still on air!

#5 The X-Files

I was too young to watch the original X-Files as the show premiered a year before I was born. I’d never gotten around checking it out, but I immediately tuned in when a reboot aired in 2016!

What’s your favorite TV show reboot or revival? Let me know in the comments!

  1. I like Donald Duck as much as the next animation hating person but Duck Tales is just a bridge too far.

I missed the boat on Twin Peaks when it started and by the time I gave it a try it was too far into its run for me to make sense of it. Never bothered with the new one.

My mother and sister love Gilmore Girls but I don’t.

I’m scattershot on Dr Who. I watch an occasional episode but never enough to be called a regular viewer.

I’ve seen a couple of episodes of the original X-Files, I had several friends who were crazy about it and I tried it so I could join in but it just wasn’t my cup of tea.

It seems nowadays they attempt to remake everything which made picking three easy. My three I loved the originals and at least in the first two cases liked the revivals, the third well…….

Hawaii Five-O (1968-1980/2010-?)-The elite branch of Hawaii’s police force…the Five-O…headed by Steve McGarret (Jack Lord), his faithful assistant Danny Williams (Dan-O) (James MacArthur) and their squad fought crime on the big island for 12 years kicked off by propulsive classic opening music. In 2010 the concept was updated but kept basically the same with Alex O’Loughlin & Scott Caan taking over for Lord and MacArthur and is still running today.

Dallas (1978-1991/2012-2014)-Life in the oil business and Southfork ranch specifically centered on the Ewing clan headed by Miss Ellie (Barbara Bel Geddes) & Jock (Jim Davis), their sons-the ruthless J.R. (Larry Hagman) and good guy Bobby (Patrick Duffy) and their wives Sue Ellen (Linda Gray) and Pamela (Victoria Principal) as their spar and manipulate everyone and each other for 13 incredibly successful years. In 2012 a new version premiered following J.R. & Bobby’s sons John Ross and Christopher (Josh Henderson & Jesse Metcalfe) as they wheedled and cajoled like their Pappies. Not nearly as successful it only lasted two years but was a decent redo.

The Odd Couple (1970-1975/2015-2017)-In 1970, two years after the successful Jack Lemmon/Walter Matthau theatrical film, Tony Randall and Jack Klugman premiered as neat freak Felix Unger and major slob Oscar Madison who tried to live together without killing each other when they separate from their wives. They did so humorously for five years. In 2015 a new version premiered with Thomas Lennon as Felix and Matthew Perry as Oscar which limped along for two years. The difference was Lennon & Perry were talented actors playing parts whereas Randall & Klugman were ideal fits who were perfection in the roles, better even than Lemmon and Matthau in the original film.

  2. I liked the reboot of Ducktales and only saw bits of the reboot for Twin Peaks (as I’ve only seen bits of the 2nd season and haven’t had the chance to finish it which is why I haven’t watched the third season though I FUCKING LOVE THAT PERFORMANCE FROM NIN).

I love Gilmore Girls but MOTHERFUCKER…. that reboot was fucking shit! The only character I cared about was Emily as I just loved that scene of her finally snapping at a DAR meeting and realizing how much bullshit it really was. She should’ve ended that scene by telling everyone in that room… “fuck you, fuck you, fuck you, fuck you, you’re cool, and fuck you. I’m out. I should’ve asked April if she knows how to build a pipe bomb so that we both blow-up this fucking shithole!”

Everything else about the reboot felt wrong. It should’ve been more of a study of grief and loss as it relates to Richard Gilmore’s passing. Luke and Lorelai should’ve been married already and have kids. Rory became an idiot in that reboot. I’d rather watch the entire episode “French Twist” from the 7th season where Lorelai and Ass-hat went to Paris on a fucking loop than watch that reboot ever again.

    • OMG yes. I don’t even know where to begin with the things I hate about that reboot. Just about everything! However, Emily story line was really moving and definitely the best thing about the new episodes.

      • I know. Emily ended up having a more interesting storyline as I read fan-fiction that was better than that revival bullshit. One of which created 3 new seasons where the 8th season was about Luke and Lorelai taking it slow and rebuilding their relationship while the latter collaborates with Emily in expanding the Dragonfly Inn to include a spa. Rory would go on the road as she has trouble adjusting to life on the road eventually accepting defeat and returned home to sort herself out though she would eventually find work as a freelance writer. The 9th season is about Luke and Lorelai’s marriage and a baby on the way, Rory moving out to live on her own in Hartford, Richard quitting the insurance game to teach, April moving back to Connecticut full-time with her mother, and Lane/Zack’s band Hep Alien getting a record deal. Oh, and Paris gets married to Doyle. Season 10 was a shortened season about Luke and Lorelai’s new baby, Rory in a new and more stable relationship, and the entire Gilmore/Danes clan finding a new home and being a dysfunctional yet loving family.

If I was writing the re-boot, it would’ve been more an exploration of loss with the entire Gilmore/Danes class just lost. I didn’t need that shit with Rory being in a relationship and having an affair with Logan and Lorelai just being immature. Who needs that shit?

      • I always felt Emily was always interesting. Here is this site created by fan fiction writers of GG fans that ended 9 years ago:

I think it’s better than the eventual re-boot. Plus, if it had continue. I think a lot of good would’ve come such as Luke/Richard winning a club tournament and catching a big fish. Emily finding her shopping equal in her newborn granddaughter. They would’ve handled Richard’s passing better than what the revival did. Plus, I think Richard would warn his family about what is to come from our dumb-ass dictator.

  3. I never got into Dr. Who but I did see one episode with those freaky angels. I think this is when David Tennant was the Doctor. I Can’t stand Donald Duck and never could understand him…i always thought of duck dinner when he was on…sorry. Twin peaks was just the right amount of David Lynch. I never got the chance to watch The Gilmore Girls but I know i would have loved it. Funny, now when I see the lead I see her saying “Fuck me Santa” from Bad Santa. I love The X-Files and watched it every chance I got. I thought there would be more episodes??

    • Now that you’ve put the image with Bad Santa in my mind, I’ll forever think of it when I see Graham.
I also thought there’d be more new seasons of The X-Files but I haven’t read any update on what is going on that front. Hopefully, we’ll get some more!
