Hey, guys!
It’s Tuesday, that means it’s time for a bookish favorites posts. Top 5 Tuesday is hosted by Bionic Book Worm and is quite simple: check out the topic and write a post with your picks.
This week we get to pick five books that are set in the country we live in. For me, that’s Austria!
#1 The Third Man by Graham Greene:
This is an absolute classic and it’s closely intertwined with the history of the city Vienna. That’s exactly where I live and it’s amazing to read about places you can still go to today. There’s even a Third Man Museum here in Vienna!
#2 The Tin Princess by Philip Pullman:
I have to admit, this is a bit of a cheat. Technically, The Tin Princess is not set in Austria but in the fictional country of Razkavia. However, Razkavia is kind of modeled after Austria and it’s a great book. So I’m totally counting that one!
#3 Dream Story by Arthur Schnitzler:
You might have heard of the Stanley Kubrick movie Eyes Wide Shut. It’s based on the novella Dream Story by Arthur Schnitzler. He one of my favorite Austrian writers and Dream Story is my most beloved one of his stories!
#4 Der Komet by Hannes Stein:
I don’t know whether there is an English version of this book, but it’s fascinating! Author Hannes Stein changed an important aspect of Austrian history: what would have happened if the Austrian Archduke Franz Ferdinand hadn’t been assassinated and subsequently, the First World War hadn’t taken place?
#5 Brother of Sleep by Robert Schneider:
This book is totally irritating, unsettling and touching. I devoured it in one sitting. Brother of Sleep is about this kid living in a very remote Alpine village and he discovers that he’s a musical genius.

Austria is on my bucket list of places to visit! It’s also on my bucket list of places to READ! This is a country that I haven’t encountered yet – thanks to this list, I might get to it soon!

I’d recommend to read The Third Man first, I think it conveys the most fitting image of Austria at that time 🙂

These all look interesting. I cannot think offhand of a book I have read set in Austria.

I think most books set in Austria are non-fiction (a genre I hardly ever read). It was quite difficult to come up with 5 books for this week’s post!

Most books tend to be set in the UK or the US even when writers do not live there.

I don’t know any of these book titles … but The Tin Princess has “princess” in the title, so I think my brand requires me to read it ASAP.

I can recommend all the Sally Lockhart books! If you have time you could also check out the movies adaptations of the first two novels that have Billie Piper as leading lady. Soooo good!

I’ll look into Sally Lockhart! I can’t resist a good book-to-movie adaption.

At least I think it is 🙈 I just reminded me so much of Austria that I am conviced it was the inspiration.
