I know I’m running a little bit late with this review. You may not be feeling the Christmas spirit any more, but this special was so wonderful, it really deserve its own review!
First of all, we have to go back a couple of years. We get to meet the very first Doctor! He is about to regenerate for the very first time and is not happy about it. Wandering through the South Pole, he makes a rather interesting encounter: the twelfth Doctor, who is also close to regeneration. But before the two guys can deepen their acquaintance, they are joined by a World War I captain and abducted into an enormous spaceship…
Sounds weird so far? Doctor Who episodes always do, so let me shed some light on this one.
First of all, I need to point out how utterly adorable David Bradley is as the first Doctor. He had already done an amazing job as William Hartnell (the actor who originally played the first Doctor) in the docudrama An Adventure in Space and Time, so I was happy to see him return.
But this is not the only surprise this episode has in store in terms of casting. As I suspect that by now everybody has seen it, I won’t be spoiling anything by saying that both Pearl Mackie and Matt Lucas are making appearances. Did I mention that the WWI captain is played by Mark Gatiss? (You might know him as writer for Doctor Who or co-creator of Sherlock)
So, you can already see, the amazing list of cast member alone is reason enough to watch this Christmas special.
However, this is not all. Among all the special, this is one of my favorite because of the story that is charming, funny, heart-warming but also terribly sad. It was Steven Moffat’s final episode as writer and he definitely left with a bang. My favorite scenes are those with the two Doctors bickering – most hilarious thing ever!
Last but not least: we get to see twelfth transform into thirteen. It had already been announced that Jodi Whittaker would join the cast as new Doctor, but finally seeing her in the Tardis got me so excited for the new season! It is certainly time for a female Doctor and I can’t wait to see what she has in store!
Twice Upon a Time is one of my all-time favorite Christmas episodes. Believe me when I tell you this special offers the full package: tears, laughter and you might even learn something about WWI!
Did you watch the episode? Let me know in the comments what you think!
