Movie Mania: Beauty and the Beast (2017)

Hello folks!
Today I choice one of 2017 highest grossing films for my review. Disney did a life action remake of the famous 1991 animation movie The Beauty and the Beast. I adored that movie when I was little, so naturally I had to check out the remake!

The Plot:
You all probably know the fairy-tale: a cold-hearted prince is turned into a beast for his cruel actions, only to be saved by finding someone who truely loves him. Well, a few years later he imprisions Maurice, who got lost in the woods and stumbled intot he castle. Turns out, Maurice has a daugther who comes along to save him. Is this the beast’s chance for love?

The Rating:
Let me explain something straight away: I was aware that this is a remake of the 1991 movie, but I really hadn’t expected this. Basically what we get is a scene by scene recreation. Except for maybe two or three additional scenes it is exactly the same film just with real actors. It’s the same songs, the same characters even the same sentences everybody gets to utter.
On the positive side we have an amazing cast that was perfectly chosen to resemble the animated characters. I was honestly amazed that they really found actors and actresses who resemble to original ideas so much.
Furthermore, the special effects are top-rate. So we get a fairy-tale that truly is magical.
What I can’t explain is why this new adaptation is 129 minutes long, when it is basically a frame by frame remake of the old movie which was only 84 minutes long. There weren’t that many additional scenes, most certainly none that were extensive. I’ll have to re-watch and figure it out!
What this film will do is give you that fuzzy warm feeling of reliving your childhood. If you loved the original film just as much as I do, you’ll find yourself singing along. However, after a days and some pondering, I was a bit disappointed that this movie had nothing new to offer. I could have watched the DVD of the old film at home and save the money for the theater ticket and would have gotten the same effect.
The only thing this film might do is introduce a new generation to the Beauty and the Beast.Ā  (And of course make a whole lot of money) I hope the children who get to see this remake will find it magical and wonderful and love it just as much as I love the original movie!

Despite being a really well made remake, the 2017 version of Beauty and the Beast disappointed me by not having to anything new. It’s a nice movie, just a bit more polished than the animated version. Otherwise there is not much difference.Ā

  1. I am glad I wasn’t the only one a bit disappointed in this one. I don’t know what exactly I expected, but when everyone raved like crazy, it was definitely more than this. Not a bad movie, but just not all that special either.

  2. I watched it and LOVED IT! Hmm.. I never looked into the length. A great reason to watch it again šŸ˜€ But one thing they did ā€“ they had 2 gay characters.
But yeah, the picture is wonderful, actors are amazing. Couldn’t ask for a better assembly.
