Today’s movie is a new take on a classic tale. I’m sure you’re all familiar with the story of Peter Pan, but this little TV film transports it to the here and now.
Lucy is a teenager with a severe heart condition. While she is in hospital waiting for a risky surgery that might save her life, she read Peter Pan. Soon she falls asleep and dreams of going to Neverland…
I know, there are tons of Peter Pan movies out, so why is this one worth checking out?
First of all, because of the setting. As I mentioned above, Lucy is in hospital, but not just any hospital: she’s at the Great Ormond Street Hospital. You may not know it (neither did I) but shortly before his death J. M. Barrie, the author of Peter Pan, left all the rights of his story to this very hospital. So by watching this film, I actually learned something!
Another really cute point is that all the people Lucy meets in hospital show up in her dream. For example Stanley Tucci who plays her doctor, appears as Captain Hook in her dream.
Moreover, I enjoyed that the focus wasn’t fully on the Neverland part of the story but also allowed the present day events in the hospital some room. Those scenes are very authentic and downright heart-breaking!
Peter and Wendy is a lovely new take on a familiar story that will surprise and delight you!
