The new Orange is the New Black season is finally out! After three days I’m done with watching and I’m pretty excited about this season. Here’s why:
It’s not just about one person. Although it did start out focusing on Piper, you get to know all of the characters. Each one has his or her own story. This includes not only the inmates but also the people working at the prison. I love how many dimensions this show has. All the aspect brought in give the show a depth that others just can’t achieve.
It’s one of the few shows that pass the Bechdel-Test. For those of you who don’t know about it, here’s a little explanation: This is a simple test to determine the way women are shown in movies. They are mostly underrepresented and only shown in a certain context. There are three simple rules a movie has to fulfill in order to pass the Bechdel-Test: there are at least two women, they talk to each other, about something else than men. This may not sound like anything outstanding, but if you think about shows like Sex and the City, you’ll realise that it actually is something special, when a show passes this test.
The character developement is amazing. Just when you think you know someone, they surprise you. Orange is the New Black really gets under your skin. The characters are not limited to one stereotypical identity, they move on and change.
