Movie Mania: Mama

Mama is a supernatural horror movie. Produced by Guillermo del Toro this Spanish-Canadian film raised high expectations.

The Plot:

Two little girls are found in the woods. Victoria and Lilly had been in an abandoned cabin for five years. During the financial crisis their father had a break down resulting in the decision to kill his wife and later his two children and commit suicide.
When asked how they survived the girls talk about “Mama” an ominus mother figure who protected them. From now on the girls’ uncle Lucas and his girlfriend take care of the girls. After some strange shadows creep around the house it is found out that Mama might be the ghost mental asylum patient from the  1800s. The ghost that still was searching for baby found the two girls in the woods and took them as substitute. As the girls grow fond of Lucas and his girlfriend Mama becomes more and more jealous resulting in an epic showdown.

The Rating:

It all started of rather interesting. You don’t quite know what to make of the story or what to expect next. The movie was thrilling and scary until Mama stepped out of the shadows. Hidden in the dark the ghost aroused goosebumps but brought into the light it seemed almost ridiculous. The story itself was pretty good but I was highly disappointed of Mama. The entire atmosphere which had been build up throughout the movie was destroyed. Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Jessica Chastain and especially the girls Megan Charpentier and Isabelle Nélisse did an amazing job.

I can recommend watching about 3/4 of the movie. If you don’t mind a rather ridiculous looking ghost you can watch the movie without any concern =)
