The next movie I want to present to you in my Christmas series is “Elf”. It can’t get more Christmas-y than a comedy about a little elf right? So here we have another perfect movie for the holiday season.
The elf Buddy who lives at the North Pole together with Santa Clause and the other elves is told that actually he is not an elf but a normal human being. When he was a baby he crawled into Santa’s sack and was accidentally brought to the North Pole. As he is too big to work with the other elves he goes to New York to search for his family. As he was given up for adoption when he was a baby and his real father never knew about him, this leads to many problems. Neither his father nor his step-mom are too happy and Buddy also has trouble with the “normal world”. Having a job and working is different from it is at the North Pole. And falling for your colleague doesn’t make it any easier.
But of course – I don’t want to spoil but this is a Christmas movie so we all know already how it’s gonna end – the happy end is inevitable. Buddy melts his daddy’s heart and kind of also saves the spirit of Christmas.
I really like this movie not only because it’s funny but also for its lovely Christmas spirit. Buddy is in the real world for the first time, he acts like a big child, naïve and not knowing better. It’s kind of wonderful to see how warm-hearted he approaches everyone, how much enthusiasm he has not matter what task he is to do. He never loses his good mood and this is something we should also try to do. Whenever I watch this movie I want to internalize Buddy’s approach to the world and the way he interacts with people. Especially the excitement he shows for little things – something we lost while growing up – is a quality we should try to preserve. It makes you happier throughout your life.
